STEP BY STEP VIDEO PAINTING LESSONS
The first course in the Landscape Painting Studio is a detailed start-to-finish guide to painting COUNTRY HOUSE.
I'll teach you everything you need to paint it right along with me.
Lessons are available on demand so you can proceed at the pace that works for you. We cover materials, composition, sketching, mixing paint, and so much more.
LEARN MY PROCESS
Sketch
I sketch my composition using various shades of alcohol markers. This makes my lines permanent so they don’t wash away when I start painting.
Discover how to choose winning compositions and transfer sketches onto painting surfaces while maintaining striking accuracy.
GROUNDING
After the sketch, I apply a thin colorful glaze over my entire panel.
Learn why I ground my panel in orange and all of the numerous benefits it provides my paintings to make stunning pieces - every time!
BOLD STROKES
Starting in the background, I layer on big chunky strokes of colorful and creamy paint.
Grow your confidence in painting with big brushstrokes for bold effects! Learn how to simplify complex objects into simple shapes for artistic impact.
MIXING COLORS
I plan and mix my color palette carefully to build depth, drama and energy in my paintings.
Learn how to mix and accurately match colors the easiest way using a Color Guide.
WORKING IN LAYERS
Working quickly from back to front, I render my scene using several layers of colorful paint.
Unlock all my tips for building up cohesive shapes with thin creamy layers of paint.
FINISHING TOUCHES
After I get my panel roughly covered, I consider which final changes I need to make to finish my painting. With the help of technology, I try out and choose which changes are most important.
Master the essential techniques of creating key details with in-depth instruction that will take your painting skills to the next level!
IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU!
It wasn’t that long ago that I was just sitting on the couch watching TV wondering if my dream of becoming a painter was ever going to happen.
What started as a hobby for me has now become something much bigger. I have a large engaged following and sell thousands of dollars in paintings and prints every month.
Most importantly, I’m making paintings I love.
Erica T.
“I'm loving the information and the calmness of Jim!”

Saguaro
Our newest painting course!
The wide open landscapes of the southwestern deserts make for some amazing and vibrant skies. I’m also fascinated by the iconic and unique cactus and plants that grow there. I’ll demonstrate how to capture this brilliant sky erupting with color surrounded by the desert landscape.
Pacific Northwest
A coastal view where sky, water and land all meet. Depicting water can be a fun challenge to paint — you literally need to go with the flow. This composition has a lot of depth — take note of how the darks get lighter and more blue in this scene as they recede.
old red barn
I love to paint these old barns I see while riding my bike around the countryside. This painting is all about the old barn with it’s red peeling paint. It stands out nicely in the green fields and the clouds add a nice blocky graphic feel.
Golden Hay Bales
A familiar late summer scene in the rural midwest. This painting has a lovely blue/gold color combination complimented by an epic sky and colorful rolling fields in the distance.
NORTHERN ENGLAND
This lovely scene was inspired by my recent bike trip across Northern England. It’s a symphony of greens rolling off in the distance.
CALIFORNIA POPPIES
I love to paint wild flowers blooming in the field and poppies are one of my favorites. There’s lots of depth and color in this painting. It’s going to be fun to paint!
DOCK SUNSET
Learn how to paint an epic colorful sky. I love to paint brilliant skies like this one — a classic lake sunset beloved here in my home state of Minnesota.
