SANDSTONE ROCKS, 22 x 30", Acrylic on Panel, ©2017 Jim Musil
Here's a throwback painting that's hanging out on my studio walls for a couple years now. It has an interesting origin story. I used to paint exclusively on rectangle formats like this one. I noticed, however, that Instagram would crop them square and the resulting square image didn't have the same impact. So, I decided to do something about it. For this painting, I chose a composition that would work even after the square crop. I used that same approach for a few more rectangle panels that I had on hand, but shortly afterwards I started buying square panels and composing for that format from the get go. I've grown to really love the square format. People sometimes ask me how Instagram has changed my art and that's a pretty tangible answer.
